Downtown Bisbee, referred to today as Old Bisbee, is a scenic beauty filled with Victorian architecture and punctuated by mild weather. Downtown Bisbee also prides itself on being culturally diverse. The streets are lined with art galleries, cute shops, and popular restaurants. Once a year in November, Bisbee hosts a tour of homes that allows visitors inside its great, refurbished Victorian and Art Deco homes. Once referred to as one of the quirkiest cities in the United States, Bisbee hosts many gay pride events and festivals that highlight its beautiful natural surroundings. The Southwest Wings Birding and Nature Festival is held during August and attracts bird lovers from all over. This festival should definitely be signed up for in advance, as spots on a van tour that take visitors to the Ramsey Canyon Preserve, the San Pedro River, and the Chiricahua Mountains fill up quickly. Other great attractions include the local high school, which is located on a hill and each floor has a ground level entrance, the Art Deco courthouse, and the many surrounding suburbs. The city was founded as a mining community, and the Copper Queen Mine can still be toured daily. The city was built in the midst of the Mule Mountains, and this makes it a great venue for the annual 1,000 Stair-Climb. The 1,000 Stair-Climb is a 5K that also has its runners climb over a 1,000 stairs throughout. Recently, the Ice Man Competition has been added to the race, and those competing have to carry a block of ice in a pair of tongs while racing.
