One of the great appeals of all cities in Alaska is the fantastic wildlife. Alaska has one of the greatest populations of bald eagles, so much so that the trees look as if they are populated with at least 10 golf balls from miles away, but when you get a little closer, you realize that it’s numerous bald eagles perched within feet of one another. Dall sheep, Kodiak bears, moose, and salmon are all very well-represented in the area as well.
 
Sitka, Alaska is a great place to visit during the summer months because of Alaska’s cool summers that usually falls somewhere between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Sitka is the only city in the Southeast portion of the state that faces the Gulf of Alaska, and this view, from atop the mountains, is worth the trip to Sitka alone.
 
The Tongrass National Forest, a protected rainforest in Alaska, is close to Sitka and worth the visit to check out its dense population of trees and wildlife. The Sitka National Historic Park, located near the mouth of the Indian River, was established to preserve the fort site and the city’s totem pole collection. The Sitka National Historic Park has set up the totem poles along the two mile hike inside.
 
About half of a mile from the park is the Russian Bishop’s House. The Russian Bishop’s House was constructed out of native spruce—that can be found in the nearby park—in the 19th century. As one of the few houses built in the style of Russian colonial architecture in the area, the house is definitely worth visiting. Like every Alaskan city, the best time to visit Sitka is in the summer months when the weather is cool and inviting.
