Ouray Vacation Rentals and Lodging
Ouray is the winter ice climbing capital of the United States. Yes, it sounds crazy, and yes, it pretty much is! Ice climbing is just that: climbing up frozen waterfalls that are made and maintained in Ouray’s Ice Park. The Ouray Ice Park is a 2 mile stretch in the Uncompagre Gorge that has been cultivated for public and free ice climbing. Every year the town hosts the annual Ice Festival in January. Some of the top names in the ice climbing field come to Ouray at this time of the year to help instruct ice climbing clinics for the thousands that attend the ice festival. The weekend-long festival also includes contests and exhibitions that are special to Ouray, like an ax throwing contest and ice climbing gear auctions. Creating the Ouray Ice Park was an expansion on another water attraction in Ouray. Ouray was already known for its natural falls, so the city just found a way to make them an attraction in the winter as well as the summer. If you are into more indoor relaxation than outdoor thrills, Ouray, Colorado is also known for its spas and hot springs. The historic Wiesbaden Hot Springs Spa is known for its peaceful atmosphere and European feel. It would be a great place to visit after testing your limits while practicing Ouray’s favorite pasttime of ice climbing! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
