Guatemala Vacation Rentals and Lodging
A vacation rental in Guatemala can be summed up in two words – spectacular scenery! The country is covered in lush forests, rolling meadows, and towering volcanoes. Guatemala is a feast for your eyes and your camera – everywhere you turn you will see awe-inspiring landscapes and countless natural wonders. Among these natural wonders are Guatemala’s many volcanoes. It seems that wherever you go during your Guatemala vacation rental, you run into one of these amazing natural formations. There is the Tajumulco Volcano, a large stratovolcano which has been declared a protected area. Or Tecuamburro, another stratovolcano, which houses a crater lake, hot springs, and boiling mud pots. But the most active volcano in Guatemala is most certainly Pacaya. This complex volcano was dormant for almost 100 years and then suddenly sprang to life again in 1965. Pacaya has been erupting fairly continuously since then. In fact, Pacaya is one of the most active volcanoes in all of Central and South America! Not everything involving Guatemala’s volcanoes involves lava and smoke, though! Lake Atitlan, in the Western Highlands, is a gorgeous volcanic lake that has become a favorite vacation rental destination. Aldus Huxley even wrote about Lake Atitlan: "Lake Como, it seems to me, touches on the limit of permissibly picturesque, but Atitlan is Como with additional embellishments of several immense volcanoes. It really is too much of a good thing." When visiting Lake Atitlan, you’re surrounded by three volcanoes, as well as several villages in which traditional Mayan clothing is still the norm. You’ll truly feel like you’ve escaped your everyday life when you’re among all this beauty! Besides the volcanoes, Guatemala is also well-known for its amazing Mayan ruins. One of the largest and most impressive of these sites is Tikal. Tikal’s ruins consist of several gorgeous buildings, including some that tower impressively over the surrounding jungle. For the truly brave, try climbing to the top of the UNESCO World Heritage Site for an impressive panoramic view. But, for a truer taste of what it might have felt like to live in the Mayan days, be sure and pay a visit to El Mirador. This archaeological site is not as crowded with tourists as Tikal, due to its relative inaccessibility. But this can be a huge plus for the adventurous traveler – several of the buildings have yet to be completely restored. Because of the ongoing nature of the work, it’s easy to feel like you’re lost in time as you look around El Mirador and the stunning mounds and pyramids which are resting among the lush jungle foliage. |
