Fort Smith is, hence the name, known as a big military town. One of the most important landmarks of the city is the Fort Smith National Historic Site. Fort Smith is located on the Arkansas River, and this historic site houses the remains of the original fort from 1817 and the first building that was used as the District Court for Western Arkansas. This site is considered a National Historic Landmark because of these buildings and because Fort Smith is considered a prominent stop on the Trail of Tears.
 
Because Fort Smith is located on the Arkansas River, a lot of the arts and recreation in the area are centered around it. The Riverfront Amphitheater is located on the Arkansas River, and it hosts a lot of shows in the annual Fort Smith Riverfront Blues Fest. Every June, this blues festival attracts all the big names in the jazz industry down South as the biggest festival in the area. The amphitheater is a part of the River Park Complex which also offers its own amenities, like bike and walking trails.
 
Another music venue is the Arkansas Best Performing Arts Center, and it regularly hosts the Fort Smith Symphony, the oldest orchestra in the state, and dance companies, like the Western Arkansas Ballet and the McCafferty School of Irish Dance.
