ROADTRIP 2010 – The Florida Keys

ROADTRIP 2010 – Sunny days sweeping the clouds away

Mike, Amy, Jo, and David by the pool at Anchor’s Escape

Ah, the Florida Keys. A little slice of paradise way down at the bottom of our great country. When the rest of the country is waiting on Spring to arrive and we’re enjoying Summer-like temperatures underneath swaying palm trees…well, It’s kinda hard to believe that you’re still in the United States and not in the Caribbean.

We took Sunday off to spend time in Homestead with Mike’s parents, but we hit the ground running on Monday morning. Our overly-ambitious plan was to make it down to Key West by that evening…when will we learn?! We always end up going slower than we plan to because we’re having so much fun talking to the property owners and managers in the area. We made it to Marathon. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the keys (side note: why not?!), that’s about halfway down. So halfway to our goal isn’t too bad – and it ended up being totally worth it!

We stopped by a place called Island Breeze Realty which is located right next to the Marathon Visitors Center. I stayed in the car to get some work done and Mike went in to chat with some property managers. When he came out later just laughing, I knew it had gone pretty well. And once he told me that the ladies in Island Breeze had called their souvenir Scenic Rentals mugs "wine mugs", I knew we had made some new friends!

We ended up staying at JoAnne and David Grego’s (owners of Island Breeze Realty) personal vacation rental by owner – Anchor’s Escape. Amazing. For more on that, be sure and read the “We’ve Scene It” blog dedicated exclusively to that gorgeous little slice of heaven.

After a fantastic dinner at The Island and a good night’s sleep at Anchor’s Escape (ah, pillowtop mattresses, how I love you!), we headed south. This time we actually made it to Key West! We spent the rest of the afternoon chatting up some Key West locals about by owner vacation rentals (taking a calamari snack break at the Southernmost Bar) and then called it a day. We celebrated a hard day’s work at our absolutely favorite sushi restaurant, Ambrosia. Whenever we’re in Key West we make it a point to pay a visit to this yummy sushi bar. And it didn’t disappoint…again!

All in all, the Keys treated us well, as usual. And, as usual, we can’t wait to go back!

Next stop: Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach. Any recommendations out there?

Great article, would you consider writing a travel story for the Florida homes and travel newspaper ?
Thanks
