It has many monikers – The Big Apple, The Capital of the World, The City that Never Sleeps, Gotham, or simply, The City. It’s been the setting for movies and television shows, the subject of numerous songs and books and is the home of Broadway. This is one city that quite possibly offers more to see and experience than any other locale in the United States.  The population is incredibly diverse, the restaurants are simply unmatched and though the lodging can be tricky, it’s easy to see why more than 19 million residents call the New York metropolitan area home and more than 46 million tourists visit the Big Apple each year.

Even though anytime of year is a good time to be in a New York State of Mind, summer is always one of the most popular times to visit. Sunny days, warm weather and plenty of seasonal activities make this a perfect summer vacation destination. Whether you’re hoping to broaden the kids’ horizons, craving a little culture, in the mood to shop or looking for a sophisticated alternative for a romantic weekend, this is one city that offers all that and more. Memorial Day kicks off the summer travel season everywhere, but in New York City, Memorial Day also coincides with the annual Fleet Week festivities, giving a patriotic flair to all that the city has to offer.

Fleet Week
New York City’s annual Fleet Week is a celebration honoring the men and women of the United States Marine Corps and Navy. The week begins when ships dock on the harbor, bringing thousands of military personnel to the City for fun, festivity and celebration. The week commences at 8:30 am (0830 for you military folk) on Wednesday, May 26th, with a parade of ships on the Hudson River on New York’s West Side. A week-long tribute follows and events include military demonstrations, ship tours, a fun run and more. On Memorial Day Monday, several parades are scheduled around the city, and the week concludes when the ships leave port on Wednesday, June 2nd.

Attending the Fleet Week events is the perfect way to inject a little patriotism into your three-day weekend. After all, isn’t that the very reason we celebrate Memorial Day?
