Memorial Day – NYC Lodging
NYC Lodging: Live Like a Local on Vacation

It’s no secret that everything in New York is expensive, and we do mean EVERYTHING. From parking to meals to that gallon of milk, unexpected costs can quickly add up when you’re in the city that never sleeps. Lodging is no exception to this trend. This summer, New York City visitors should expect to pay a minimum of $200 per night for a decent New York hotel. And “decent” in NYC does not equal luxury. Space is at a premium and rents are high in New York, so though a $200 price tag elsewhere might ensure pretty luxurious digs, it may only get you a basic bed, bath and a couple of hundred square feet here. To stay in the lap of luxury at the famed Plaza Hotel, you’re looking at a starting rate of $745/night - for a 475 square foot room. Talk about a budget buster. But before you shelve the dream of having breakfast at Tiffany’s or seeing the steps of Carrie’s brownstone for yourself, rest assured that there are alternatives to this over-priced madness.
So what’s a traveler to do?
Sure you can pack Pop-Tarts and Ramen noodles for in-room dining and limit your New York vacation itinerary to items marked “FREE” in the guidebook. Or choose a hotel an hour outside the city and pay to take the train in everyday. But really, what kind of vacation is that? If, like me, you prefer to experience all the culture, restaurants and nightlife that a city has to offer, not to mention the incredible New York City stores, without sacrificing comfort, safety and the ability to afford food when I return home, then it’s time to consider a by owner vacation rental for your next visit to the city. Sure you prefer to stay in a vacation by owner home when you go to the beach every summer, and of course you’d rent a condo for that Colorado ski vacation, but did you know that you can find vacation rental worldwide? Including a fantastic and often cheap New York City apartment for your next trip to the city? Most of the New York apartments offered on Scenic Rentals average less than $250 a night – and sleep up to eight people. With all that savings, you’ll have more than enough left in the vacation budget to enjoy an evening (or two) at a New York theatre or indulge in some serious retail therapy in the shopping capital of the world.
Say goodbye to cramming your whole family into one tiny hotel room or blowing the bachelorette party budget on lodging. Instead, check out these beautiful and often spacious (by New York standards) by owner vacation rentals offered through Scenic Rentals. When you stay in a private vacation rental, you’ll find all the comforts of home like privacy, additional space, a full kitchen and a living area for relaxing coupled with standard hotel amenities like hairdryers, irons and cleaning service. Plus, staying in a New York City rental affords the casual visitor a rare opportunity to live like a true New Yorker for a few days. Shop for gourmet goodies at Zabars, take a morning run through residential areas and window shop local New York City stores while exploring the neighborhood and experience a far less touristy New York. And you’re never more than a short walk, cab ride or subway trip away from all the top New York City attractions you want to see. With a New York City vacation rental, you’ll be in the middle of all the action but far from the maddening crowds. And in my book, that’s a true New York experience.
