Memorial Day: Hilton Head
We’re heading back to the beach this week for an in-depth look at South Carolina’s Hilton Head Island.

Though a Hilton Head Island getaway is always a popular choice for a beach vacation, this coastal paradise has become more popular than ever lately, thanks in part to the tragic Gulf oil spill. Today marks day 36 since the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and though BP has taken measures to stop the flow of oil, nothing has worked yet to totally repair the leak. As Memorial Day weekend and the summer travel season approach and fears rise about polluted coastlines, foul odors and unsavory conditions, some travelers are choosing to forego a Florida Panhandle vacation and explore the Carolina coastline instead.
Located deep in the South Carolina Lowcountry, Hilton Head Island is an ideal spot for a relaxing family vacation. You’ll experience the local culture througout your visit, infused into delicious seafood,, in unique wares at charming shops and ripe for exploration in interesting museums. Or, take it outside and enjoy the opportunity to discover salt marshes, tide pools and local wildlife. Fishing, crabbing and boating all have their place during a Hilton Head vacation. Plus, there are more than 40 Hilton Head Island golf courses and plenty of tennis courts so you can perfect your game while you’re away.
In late May, the weather is still relatively mild in Hilton Head, with temperatures generally resting in the low to mid-80s. A gentle sea breeze keeps things comfortable and the occasional scattered shower does wonders to cool things off. Lodging and entertainment specials are offered throughout the month and Memorial Day weekend kicks off many of the summer events.
Throughout Memorial Day weekend, you’ll find plenty to do on Hilton Head Island and in the surrounding area. Outdoor concerts, the Hilton Head Island Festival featuring a juried art show and Brew! Celebrate the Arts are just a few of the family-friendly Hilton Head offerings.
And with more than twelve miles of pristine beaches offering every activity under the sun, plenty of Hilton Head houses for rent, unique shopping and hundreds of tempting restaurants, Hilton Head Island is a playground of fun for the whole family.
